Wakkerstroom Events

Our town hosts a variety of events and festivals:

  • Wakkerstroom Music Festival (Classical Music) ;
  • Vleifees
  • Art Ramble:
  • Different markets, e.g. Heritage Market, Christmas market, Fresh Produce Market.
  • Annual Mountain Race: Half Marathon and 14km trail run
  • Annual Mountain Bike Race over two days (stage race)


A bird list of over 400 species has been recorded in the area with Crowned Cranes, Marsh and Grass Owls,  White-winged Flufftails, Rudds- Bothas Larks, Ground Woodpecker, Southern Bald Ibis,  Blue Korhaans, Yellow-breasted- and Short-tailed Pipits, Secretary bird all residing here.

During the summer months, northern migrants arrive to fill the air with chatter and calls that will excite any birder.  Bird guides are available but must be booked well in advance as many birders are visiting Wakkerstroom, especially through the summer months.

Mountain Biking

There are many quiet, safe roads to ride on in the area as well as some fairly technical routes. Wakkerstroom is ideal for high altitude mountain bike training. Mountain biking is also one of the best ways to experience the natural serenity of the surrounding countryside.

Nature Walking Trails

Wakkerstroom also lends itself to some truly magnificent hikes, like for instance up Ossewakop which can also be reached by car as long as you have a 4×4 vehicle. You will enjoy the breath-taking views over the Zaaihoek dam and the Balele Mountains towards KwaZulu Natal.

There are also a number or self guided historical and nature trails in and arround Wakkerstroom that can be done either on foot, bicycle or car.

Plants and Flowers

What at first glance appears to be grasslands is suddenly transformed into a array of colour during December, January and February. The high altitude grasslands of Wakkerstroom is home to a rich flora which includes a large variety of Orchids, Watsonias, Scarlet River Lilies, River Bells, Arum Lilies, Blood Lilies, Redhot Pokers, Agaphantus, Nerines and many more. Wakkerstroom area is home to many plant species that appear on the red list.
